Support TRU's work to improve Detroit Transit!
TRU's got a challenge: promoting new transit investment while also supporting our essential existing bus service - we sure need both! Should this email focus on M-1 Rail construction or the upcoming SMART millage? My answer? Both!
M-1 Rail Construction Begins Monday!
The long-awaited day is actually here. Shovels are going in the ground Monday! Before winter, the first new streetcar tracks in 75 years will be in the ground!
There won't be a formal groundbreaking ceremony, but here's some information you may want to know about construction plans and detours:
- Woodward will be completedly closed to auto traffic (car, truck, and bus) from just north of Campus Martius to the north end of Grand Circus Park
- Cross streets will be open most of the time for cars, pedestrians, and wheelchairs
- Sidewalks and pedestrian access will remain open through construction, as will all the local shops (so support local businesses!!).
- Buses will be detoured around this four block section. SMART and DDOT have both posted detour plans on their websites.
You can get more questions answered at www.M-1rail.com, download the M-1 FAQ (pdf) or call 1-800-511-3931. You can also sign up for their electronic newsletter, follow M-1 RAIL on Twitter and “like” it on Facebook for ongoing updates throughout this two-year, 3.5 mile construction timeline.
SMART Millage Vote in 10 Days and Counting!
The August 5 election is coming quick, and so is the activity surrounding it! Media is highlighting it's importance - here's the first few:
Remember, you can vote early if you think you might not be able to get to the polls on election day. Just go to your city clerk, sign an application, and they'll hand you your ballot right then! Avoid the rush!
Volunteer to Keep SMART Rolling!
We need help! Can you spend two hours in the next two weeks to help Keep SMART Rolling? We need people to call voters all week and hand out literature on Election Day. Please contact TRU's Assistant Director Ruth Johnson and she'll send you the options and details.
