TRU's Position on M-1 Rail

Several people have asked for more details about TRU's position on the M-1 Rail project.  As you may know, we strongly advocated for a more rapid center-running light rail on Woodward Avenue, and still think that would be best.

However, that's not the project that is approved and funding.  So evaluating the M-1 Rail project independently of shouldas and couldas, we developed this position:

TRU supports the M-1 Rail streetcar as a positive step in providing an attractive, reliable transit option.

As TRU has said time and again, greater Detroit needs more and better transit options, both for local residents and to increase the region’s competitiveness against other metro areas, which M-1 Rail will provide.

We fully recognize what the project is NOT:

  • It is NOT a silver bullet to solve Detroit’s transit troubles; but one important step forward.

  • It is NOT a replacement for DDOT or SMART bus service; we must have a broad regional system that includes buses, rail, and other options.

  • It is NOT rapid transit; it is designed to primarily be a circulator, although it is expected to travel somewhat faster than current DDOT buses.

Download TRU's position statement for more details on the M-1 Rail project, TRU's position, and the project's strengths and weaknesses.
